Tacos, Tacos, Tacos

We had two fancy meals in CDMX. At Pujol, we did a taco tasting menu. This is Maggie with the snacks.

The tacos were very unique. This is Maggie with a pea and peanut taco, which she thought was the best of the bunch.

And this is Maggie with the mole. The old (dark) mole is +2,100 days old.

We had desserts outside. This ice cream was light yet flavourful. The meal was a nice experience overall. Maggie told us, YOLO!

We grabbed tacos are several different places. These are chicharron tacos from Orinoco Taqueria.

For an afternoon snack, we had delicious churros from Churros El Moro. Four long ones were 36 pesos.

After all the eating, sightseeing, and walking, Maggie loved resting on our hotel's rooftop. It was a great place to relax and recharge.

We had a great time exploring CDMX and would definitely return!

Maggie x CDMX

Maggie recently returned from a fab getaway in CDMX. We stayed at Casa Octavia. It was a chique refuge in the beautiful neighbourhood of Condesa.

We mainly went to CDMX to eat. For our first night, after grabbing a bunch of street food in the afternoon, we had dinner at Xel-Ha Bar, a local cantina that specializes in Yucutan cuisine. The lime soup was Maggie's fav.

The next day, we had a huge breakfast at El Cardenal. We started off with hot chocolate and a pastry...

...followed by flautas. Yum!

We checked out two museums during our stay - Museo Jumex and Museo Soumaya. Both are very close to one another and both are excellent. Museo Jumex had a Urs Fischer exhibit. Maggie liked this croissant with a butterfly on it. The croissant reminded Maggie of a crescent moon.

Maggie didn't quite get this rhino but it was big and shiny.

The building of Museo Soumaya was very impressive.

Equally impressive was the art collection, which is the private collection of a wealthy businessman, Carlos Slim. This is a Diego Rivera...

...and this is a Rodin. The museum has the largest collection of Rodin outside of France.

Feels Like Fall

 
Maggie joined my family and I on a mini road trip to Bancroft to visit an old friend. Along the way, we hit up a few butter tart places. Maggie liked the tarts from the Kawartha Buttertart Factory & Bakery the best.

We also hit up a few fruit/veggie stands on our drive. We didn't buy any gourds or pumpkins, but we did get apple pie.

Maggie ran toward this corn field hoping it would be a corn maze. No such luck.

But Maggie did luck out with candy! She brought back a bunch of treats for the friends. We know Halloween will be different this year, but at least it will still be sweet!

Melothria Scabra

We've been trying lots of new fruits and veggies this summer, including plumcots, doughnut peaches, and Maggie's new favourite - melothria scabra, a.k.a. mouse melons. They look like mini watermelons, but they are kinda cucumber-ish. Some folks pickle them, or use them in cocktails. We're going to use them for a salad this week.

Quarantine Life

How is everyone holding up? We just finished week five of quarantine life. Maggie has been keeping busy at the condo.

She has been trying lots of new cookie recipes, including this one for buckwheat chocolate cookies from Bon Appetit.

She has also been reading books. Dear Girls is the last book we got from the library before it shut down because of COVID-19.

Every now and then she watches movies on Netflix. Shout out to Chris for adding us to your account!

Maggie to a T

As a very belated birthday celebration for my mum, we ventured to Laduree for a leisurely afternoon tea. Maggie's favourite sweet was the pistachio macaron and her favourite savoury was the croque monsieur sandwich. Everything was very Instagram-worthy. Speaking of Instagram, do you use it? We are thinking of getting an account for Quatch Watch.

Hello, Ralph!

Maggie and Clem are posing with Ralph, a 15 foot dog created by Hamilton's horticulture staff. He is made of grass from New Zealand, which was recently grown in the city's greenhouses. He has an internal soil and water system to keep him cool this summer. We think Ralph is going to bring a smile to many faces!

Royal Wedding

Maggie, Clem, and I slept over at my parents place so we can watch the royal wedding together. We had to wake up very early but it was worth it. My mom prepared scones which was a nice touch. Three cheers for the happy couple!

Little Monster, Big City

We spent the Easter long weekend in NYC. B had a few things to do in the Big Apple. Maggie and I joined for the ride. After checking into our hotel, we visited a few shops in SoHo and had a late lunch at Sadelle's. The bagel tower was very decadent!

The Raptors are in the playoffs so we watched the game before dinner. As you can see, Maggie controlled the remote!

We spent a decent amount of time in Central Park the next day. The weather was in the high 20s.

She was also being silly, photo bombing!

On our last day, I took Maggie to visit my old stomping grounds. I did an internship at the UN several years ago.

We then ate, ate, and ate some more. Our first stop was Tim Ho Wan. In 2014, Maggie went to the original location with Colin in Hong Kong.

We ended up going to a bunch of places, including Baohaus. Maggie liked the names of the bao. On the left is the Uncle Jesse Bao, and on the right is the Chairman Bao.

All of the Lights

Maggie braved the wind earlier this evening to check out the Toronto Light Festival. There were 21 installations from around the world. This one was very popular. Doesn't Maggie look angelic?

Mansions, Oh My!

There are several mansions to tour in Newport. We visited the following:

1. The Elms 

2. Chateau-sur-Mer

3. The Breakers

4. Marble House

5. Rosecliff

Many of these mansions were summer "cottages", used by wealthy families for only eight to twelves weeks a year. The mansions now belong to the Preservation Society of Newport County. They are worth checking out!

Hi from Newport!

Maggie, my mum, and I went on an impromptu trip to Newport. We enjoyed checking out the shops and walking along the water.

Most accommodations in Newport are B&Bs. We found a great one just off of the main drag. It served excellent breakfast and afternoon treats. Can you find Maggie on the bed?

The weather was much hotter than expected - over 40 degrees with humidity. We braved the heat and walked up the Cliff Walk. It was a nice scenic walk of the water and mansions.

We ate at some great restaurants, including the Mooring. We had lobster, crab, and shrimp fritters, as well as clam chowder.

We also had lobster! Yum!

On our final day we had afternoon tea at One Bellevue. Maggie shared a cup of Earl Grey tea with me.

The main reason why we went to Newport was to check out the mansions. We'll show you some photos in our next post!
